Hacksaw Remixes

I’ve been busy remixing some tracks with my Hacksaw synth. One is a cheesy Eurobeat track from a cartoon I watched and the other is from a classic video game. They are a bit dry as always but should serve as pretty good demos. My synth is all over these, with a few homebrew FM sounds and a third party plugin for all the drum hits.

Christmas Playlist

We’ve been putting together an alternative xmas playlist on Spotify. Trying to avoid traditional xmas cheese while staying on theme, there’s some pretty wild picks from dub and reggae instrumentals to straight up death metal, with lots of trashy punk in between. Not exactly family friendly and probably not one for the office xmas party 🙂

Merry Christmas ya filthy animals!

FM Synths for Sound Design

I’ve been working on a couple of variations for my FM synth, trying to get closer to the iconic sound of Yamaha’s YM2612 chip as used in the Sega Genesis. This mostly involved stacking operators in new ways to recreate traditional FM algorithms.

To put my synth to the test I decided to try and recreate the soundtrack of a classic Sega game to compare the results. I picked this video because it has a good balance of instruments and sound effects, all created with FM.

Plucked Strings

I’ve been working on a new synth in Max using Karplus-Strong synthesis. It takes grains of white noise and puts them through a very fast adjustable delay line (<10ms) to produce string like tones. Using white noise ensures subtle variation in the harmonic content of each note played, adding further realism. By switching to pink noise or other filtered noise types I am able to make it less metallic, closer to the sound of a nylon stringed instrument. I’m still working out some bugs and I hope to offer more physical modelling features, but I think it sounds good so far. Check out my demo below:

Hacksaw M4L Demo

First upload in a while. I’m going to start posting here more often, sharing Max devices along with other bits and pieces over in the media section.

I made a short demo of my Hacksaw synth using midi from the F-Zero soundtrack “Big Blue”. Everything runs through the synth with no other processing other than the drum track. I’ll be making the device available soon and will share the link here.

Made with Juce

This was part of my Masters project a couple of years back. I cut this video down to around two minutes and re-uploaded.

It was part of a study into digital oscillator design so I had no need for midi input. The RM and FM modulators took some work but I’m really happy with the results. I made this in Juce so all of the audio processing was written in C++.
